Here in Cali, your motor vehicles need to be registered (The state loves the money), and to register your vehicle insurance is required. The only way around this is to register the bike as "non-op", which means it can't be ridden.

Who cares how you look on your bike? The question is do you like it? If yes, Great! If not, sell it and get one you like.
