Who Pays Title Insurance In Florida

Claude Said:

How to purchase a car out of state?

We Answered:

I am in FL and sold a car to a couple in AL. The husband came down to purchase the car with a pre-approved loan that was only in the wife's name. We thought he was an idiot, but just sent the paperwork with little "sign here" tabs where she could sign and mail the paperwork back. You need to take a very clear and enlarged copy of the driver's license to the dealership of the person purchasing the car. The dealership will want a credit application on your father and most likely you since you are taking this vehicle to verify that he has the means to purchase this vehicle or just to make sure they can trust each of you to actually pay as a GM's A$$ is on the line if something goes awry. You'll need an insurance card with buyer's name on it as well. You must be flying down or at least taking someone with you so that both vehicles can come back up...or you are using a trailer.

We had a guy go to Ohio to pick up a new Challenger...so understand what you are doing. The taxes, registration, etc will be painful on the pocketbook since you can't wrap up the money in the monthly payments.

Good luck and safe traveling! I hope I answered everything! Oh, yeah, call the dealer and ask to speak to the finance manager to make sure there's nothing either of us forgot. Tell him/her everything so there's nothing left to interpretation.

Claire Said:

Who owns the vehicle and what can I do so my dad cant take my car away from me?

We Answered:

Instead of worrying about how to prevent your dad from taking away the car he helped you buy, you should worry about how to mend this very important relationship. I'm sure your dad has done some things that make you angry, everyone's dad does. But you're no angel, either. You both have many years to look forward to, so forget about the stupid car and fix things with him.

Christian Said:

Can I get registration on my car in Florida by myself?

We Answered:

I live in Florida too but I've only been here a couple of years so I am not sure about any age requirement. But you will have to get the original title if you want to register it here.

Take proof of identity (required for all owners), proof of Florida insurance, original out-of-state title, and verification of physical inspection of the motor vehicle's *vehicle identification number (VIN), completed on a form HSMV 82040, Application for Certificate of Title With/Without Registration, to your local Florida county tax collector's office.

Lillian Said:

Can I be sued if my daughter gets into an accident?

We Answered:

It's not so much the insurance being in your name that makes you liable as it is the fact that the vehicle itself is in your name. If she's driving something that belongs to you, they stand a chance with a lawsuit.

If you're really all that worried about the risk, the best thing to do is get the vehicle and insurance all just in her name and then you're free and clear. But keep in mind that you will be putting her in a situation that will cause her to be paying a horrible amount.. especially considering that Florida insurance is already SO EXPENSIVE, and those tickets and her lack of driving experience has been offset by discounts given to you and your husband.

You'll want to be very careful with this decision. You might be better off just maxing out the coverages on your current policy and if you have home & auto with the same company, getting a Personal Umbrella Liability Policy so that you can get over $1 Million in coverage behind her. Could end up being cheaper and then you likely won't have to worry about a thing!
