The idea that all men are identical to each other in every way is so obviously stupid, I don't see why you're so attached to it.

Losing one's job, when that's one's identity is really hard on a person. Looking for work and not finding it is one of the most depressing experiences there is.

As for food, why not keep lists of specific things that are needed in the house, and see if you can talk him into going to the store during the day.

When things run low (before you've run out completely), write it on a list.
