well.... if you have a truck to tow it with u should be able to rent a car dolly from U-Haul or a company like that. What a car dolly is, is a trailer that only the front tires of the car you are towing are on the trailer and the rear tire are on the road. I have used them alot and they work great. U-haul may even let you rent it at one U-haul store and return it to a different one so you don't have to drive all the way back to were you got it from.

get the insurance just for as long as you need it to finalize your reinstatement process. once you get your license in NY, you can cancel the insurance, or change it over to NY if you want. you don't have to buy a year's worth of insurance--just a few months. i see a number of sites online that sell the sr-22 high risk insurance, so you can take care of it quickly. you just need an operator's insurance since you have no car.

i'm just afraid that the advice of a lawyer would cost almost as much as an insurance policy, and the end result would be the same. the problem is, the ins. co has to electronically submit your ins info to the DMV, so there's really no way to bypass that. the only alternative is to deposit $35k cash with the DMV, and goodness knows how long it would be B4 you get that back, given how broke our state is!

You'll need the properly released title, a bill of sale or statement of gift, preferably notarized but not always required. If you are getting the car in trade for the repairs, you should have a document stating that, and how much the repair cost is. Provide the receipt from the mechanic to show your proof of repair cost. You will pay sales/use tax based on that amount. You need proof of insurance to transfer the registration/title to your name. To do this prior to driving the car, provide the VIN, make,model,yr of car to your insurance agent. You will do the transfer in Albany, but you must have the insurance in place, before driving the car. That portion can be done by mail. If emission testing is required, you'll need that prior to going to the DMV. All documents will be needed at the DMV to transfer title.
