Title Insurance Michigan

Jay Said:

can you put insurance on a car in michigan if the title is not in your name?

We Answered:

Legally no, but I have done it in past, they won't ever find out, unless accident happens, then questions might be asked.

Car was in my name and insurance was in girlfriends name.

Michele Said:

Is proof of insurance needed to transfer a car title to a relative?

We Answered:

Depending on where he lives, he shouldn't need to plate a parked car. He certainly does not need to insure a parked car. Though, some Michigan counties have rules about how many vehicles you can have on property (I think it applies to 'dead' cars, though).

If you want to put the title in his name right away, he will need to insure, at least temporarily, the vehicle. To transfer a vehicle's title in Michigan to a family member, you need to present the SOS with a valid proof of insurance because upon transferring the title, he will also be getting the registration and a plate. The insurance must be in the name of the person receiving the vehicle.

Here's more info:

If the above link stops working, use this:

Then choose 'How do I...' > 'Transfer Title / Plate' from the menu on the home page.

Eleanor Said:

Will my car insurance still be valid when I go away to college in a different state (from Michigan to Oregon)?

We Answered:

If you get a job right away in oregon you would be considered a resident, or spend more than 30 days in state, you would be considered a resident. You can register the car in oregon (license plates registration, smog cert and new title, = about $150 for two years. if your dad plans to keep the car, then you come down in it, find one here and send his back,) or rent one here, find a car, go to school, find your house whatever. I have lived all over oregon, I really liked both Eugene and Portland and have lived in both long term. best of luck,

Mitchell Said:

In Michigan, the state titles a trike as a motorcycle. Would motorcycle insurance also be appropriate?

We Answered:

Yes.
Your insurance needs to say the same as the title.

Peggy Said:

got a car previous owner has title and registration won't give it to me and i need insurance for michigan?

We Answered:

You are in a pickle...why won't they give you the title?

In the meantime, driving the car is not an option for you. For one, you can not insure a vehicle you do not own, and since you don't have the title in your possession, you have no proof you own it. Second, you have no insurance.

You need to get the title or dump the car off & get your money back.

Ruth Said:

Can you drive a newly bought vehicle TO the DMV to GET registration, title and insurance?

We Answered:

You should be able to do that with all the paper work on you. If you were to get ticketed or anything, there is definitely a problem with law enforcement around there.

Lloyd Said:

My name is on title and not the mortgage, if my husband dies what does this mean?

We Answered:

Thew bank still owns it. If paid of you will own it after its paid off without having to go through the estate stuff.

Mortgage just means who is responsible for the loan. Title when paid off will determine who owns house.

Discuss It!
