Title Insurance In New Jersey

George Said:

Buying totaled car back from ins. co?

We Answered:

Did a little research on the NJ MVC website. It does not appear that you have to place a salvage title on a vehicle to which you already have title. The salvage title comes into play when the vehicle ownership is transferred or when a person brings a salvage vehicle into the state.
For confirmation, you may want to call (888) 486-3339 ext. 5063

JUST BOUGHT A CAR> WHAT DO I DO NOW?

We Answered:

If you have the title, signed over by the former owners, take it to the DMV and follow the steps; they'll guide you. It shouldn't take very long at all, since the DMV does this sort of thing every day. There will be a fee, but we can't guess how much, and you may have to pay a sales tax, too; the PA DMV web site may tell you the fees and percent of tax.

Neil Said:

if I don't transfer a vechile registration into my name what happens, i have car title please reply ?

We Answered:

I don't really understand what you're saying, poor English, but if you're asking can you sell a car without it being registered, yes, as long as you have the title in your name. You don't have to have plates on it to sell it, as long as your name is on the title. What I mean by having your name on the title is that you get a new title from the state and your name is printed on the front of it as the owner. Then you can sell it. You have to have that new title with you listed by the state as the owner

What is the procedure for transferring the title of a used car purchased in NJ to be driven in florida?

We Answered:

I can not find any information whether Florida has any kind of vehicle inspection/smog or emissions or vin checks before you register the car in Florida if purchased out of state or basically the car has to be in Florida in order for you to title and register it there. If there is, then the car will have to be with you to title and register it. If not, you can do what you have planned, get the title and registration in Florida with the title, bill of sale and their forms and bring the plates back to NJ and drive the car back to Florida. However, there is another way to do this. You can take the title to any NJDMV/NJMVC (NJ motor vehicle) and with proof of insurance, the clear title with your name as buyer with an out of state address (Florida) and valid drivers license and they will issue you an out of state temporary registration (tag) that gives you 30 days to get the car to Florida (or whatever state) to get it titled and registered in your state. That way the car will be with you if your state requires anything or any kind of inspection before registration.
The seller in NJ does not have to be with you to get this out of state temporary.
I only have one suggestion no matter what you decide to do, and that would be to get a written bill of sale with the year, make, model, serial number, date of sale, mileage and price paid and have the seller sign and get it notorized. This may be more than what is needed in Florida, but better more information and paperwork than not enough! They won't prevent you from titling and registering it with too much information, but they will prevent you if you don't have enough information or proper paperwork!
Having worked for NJDMV, I will tell you to make sure that there are absolutely NO cross outs/white outs or ereasures on the title. A title is a legal document and any alterations will void it completely. And I believe that goes for most if not all states.
Personally, I would get the out of state temporary if you don't know what Florida requires. Or you could title and register it in NJ and then take it to Florida. Then switch it when you get to Florida and reside there.
