This statement was quoted by a fictional character in the 2005 movie, "The Island", but when you stop to think of it, what does this statement really imply. Does it mean that man will give up everything for a little more time to live?Giving up one's sense of right and wrong and all of the moral fiber that is left in the person in question, just to be able to live for another minute, month or even a year?

In the 2005 movie, “The Island”, and the short story by Shirley Jackson titled, “The Lottery” they proceed to make many strong points to justify the initial statement. Such examples in "The Island" are taking other lives to save their own as well as subjecting them to human trafficking, and last, but not least, their undesirable will to live.
In the short story, “The Lottery”, to save his life, some one questioned the principles of fairness in the equation. All of these are the prime examples of events that help justify the statement that “people will do any thing to survive”.

One of the two main points that I had found within "The Island" that the statement is true, that man will do any thing to survive is that through out the movie, many people died in order for there “insurance holder” to live. The thing that stands out the most about this is that the clones that where being killed where not just breathing beings, they had feelings, thoughts, opinions, personalities and friends. The definition of human is a form of being belonging to man or mankind; having the qualities, attributes and emotion of a man; of or pertaining to man or to the race of man; as, a human voice; human shape; human nature; human sacrifices. The clones in the movie where considered to be technically human beings that where being grown for the purpose of certain death so another can live.

Human trafficking is a crime against humanity. It involves an act of recruiting, transporting, transferring, harboring or receiving a person through a use of force, coercion or other means, for the purpose of exploiting them. What was done in "The Island" was nothing short of trafficking . Yes, for the most part, the clones where treated well. However they where still being sold, used and brutalized for the sole purpose of another person. No one has the right to buy or control another being of the human or in this case, partial human race. This is just another example of the extent that people will go to survive.

On an outlook from the opposing side (the clones or “partial humans view) they also proved that people will do any thing to live. During the movie, Ewan McGowan character as well as Scarlett Johansson’s character, had put themselves in many dangerous situations because of the will power they had to live. Such situations include the escape in the first place because they did not know what was on the outside from all they could have known they could have been walking into a world that was not compatible for the living requirements of the character. The running from the authorities who had continuously fired at them or capture them is again a example of direct danger that they continued to face instead of turning themselves in. Even though the intent was clear that death was to follow, the clones where not 100 percent sure what would happen; therefore they did not wish to take the chance.



The ending of "The Short Story", written by Shirley Jackson, told of her yelling about how unfair it was that she had ended up “being the winner” of the lottery. When she first started to partake in the lottery it was all fair game, however, when she was chosen to be the one who was to die, she started to insist that it was not fair - that they would redo the draw because she was not satisfied with the results. She was not ready to die. The over- all conclusion of proving that the statement quoted above is true is this: in order to survive, a person will look for any reason or explanation of why the odds worked against him and all the different reasons why the results where dishonest and how they need changing.


The conclusion to the matter of “if people will do any thing to survive” is true. For people will go to the great extent of taking other's lives, (to save their own) as well as subjecting them to human trafficking. They have the desire, the will to live and will find any way of changing the fates.

UPDATE: New Health Care Bill Drafted by House of Representatives Filled with Psycho/Pharma Industry Agenda

Information: The newly-forged 1990-page “Affordable Health Care for America Act” (HR 3962) offered by the House of Representatives is filled with mental health provisions intended to prop up psychiatry as well as the pharmaceutical industry with billions in future income. Key mental health components of this House bill:
Mental Health Parity
The bill mandates Mental Health Parity, or equal insurance coverage for mental disorders as what are covered for physical diseases, whether under their regular health insurance or whether a person gets their new coverage through the Health Insurance Exchange.  Psychiatric patients are traditionally “cured” when their insurance benefits run out.  In this bill, those benefits never run out.  Considering there are no medical tests to verify the existence of any psychiatric disorder, and without anything other than a psychiatrist’s opinion about whether or not the person’s “illness” is “cured,” this legislation becomes nothing more than taxpayer funded billions to the psycho/pharmaceutical industry who will continue their jihad of mass drugging of Americans.  This provision could easily encompass all 374 diagnoses in psychiatry’s diagnostic manual, covering everything from Phase of Life Problem to Arithmetic Disorder.  Section 214, Page 100

School Based Health Clinics
The bill includes funding for School Based Health Clinics that will include subjective psychiatric mental health screening (called mental health assessments) of children, and “referral to a continuum of services including emergency psychiatric care, community support programs, inpatient care, and outpatient programs” as part of their “comprehensive primary health services.”  This is a direct feeder line for the psycho/pharmaceutical industry directly into our schools. – Section 2511, Page 1352

Republican health care reform won't work; the answer is as simple as that. The Republicans don't care about the poor--they should just "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and stop "living off the dole". If the Republicans had their way, Food Stamps and Medicaid would be abolished. Back in the day, people didn't want Social Security either.

The simplest way to answer your question is this: they don't care. They're not interested in helping. They're interested only in establishing an aristocracy full of white rich people with antiquated Judeo-Christian ideals and letting the poor, the black/Hispanic/anything but Caucasian, the gays, and the single moms die off. As long as their grandchildren's grandchildren never have to work a day in their lives, it's all good.

Sure, why not. It's not going to stop them from doing anything they aren't already doing. As long as we maintain the right of churches and private chapels to not marry gays, I'm fine with it. But as long as we are defending the rights of homosexuals to get married, we must also defend the rights of the various churches that are religiously opposed to the concept also because forcing churches to wed gays is also a case of government dictating religion. There is nothing wrong with a homosexual couple getting married in the courthouse or in the little Vegas chapel.

Besides, legal gay marriage may also help iron out a few gender inequalities. In some states, one half of the union (either the male of the female) gets preference in domestic issues. If both members of the relationship are of the same gender, the law cannot show preference based on gender.
