Purpose Of Title Insurance

Melinda Said:

How do I transfer a title for a car purchase that is out of state and without one party present?

We Answered:

Actually, one person can own the car and another can register and insure it. Here's how it works: anyone can own a car, even if you don't have a license. But to register it, you will need at least a permit and the insurance would have to be under the name of the permit or license holder. Before I could get my own insurance, I bought my first car, put the title under my name, and had my mom register and insure it. What you will have to do is buy the car, and receive the title. Then the other person opens up a policy or adds the car to their current policy. You go with them to the dmv and register the car under the other persons name and you sign and give permission that you are allowing them to register the car. Once you get tags and stickers from the dmv, you can go and pick up your car. I will post a link to the dmv website, so you can read any addtl info. Hope this helps!!

Lauren Said:

My son is suing me for 15k because I will not sign the title for the car he paid for back to him, will I lose?

We Answered:

At age 22, he is an adult and free to make his own decisions. When a child becomes an adult, the parent's role changes from "ruler" to "adviser." You can voice your opinions all you want, but it's no longer your place to interfere if you think he's making a mistake. Part of the growing up process means adjusting to new life roles, not just for the kid, but for the parent as well.

By denying your son his car (that he paid for, nonetheless) you have sent your son the message that he cannot trust or rely on you, and that you will interfere in his life if given any opportunity. The result of that is that he will pull away from you, not letting you know what is going on because he fears you will take away his right to make his own choices. If you want to have any sort of good relationship with your son, sign over the car, apologize and wish him luck.
