Most states will allow you to purchase what is called a trip permit. You place the trip permit in the rear windshield and you do not need tags, however, you should have your insurance set before you move the car.

You cannot use someone else's tags. If you do that, they are assuming any risk that might happen to the vehicle.

Contact your Division of Motor Vehicles and ask if they have trip permits. I'm sure they probably do or have some means whereby you can go pick up your car (perhaps temporary tags).
