Carole Said:

is it legal for car dealer to require a copy of driver's license when buying a car in Nebraska?

We Answered:

You shouldn't have your SS# on your license but its a easy fix. Make a copy and mark it out.

Its not unreasonable for them to ask for a drivers license and if your car is over $10k its required.

In fact, many dealers require a copy of your drivers license PRIOR to test driving it.

While your identity could be stolen from a car dealer, its highly unlikely.

I am sure they would accept a copy with the ss# blacked out.

I think you are being WAY overly paranoid. There are SO many low paid workers in ALL kind of fields that have access to the same information on a daily basis and it never gets stolen.

ID theft is VERY VERY rare.

It HAPPENED TO ME about 15 years ago before it was happening all the time. Really wasn't all that bad. A few phone calls, a few letters and presto, its gone.

I went overboard trying to have the guy arrested but cops don't care. I had their exact location, where they had a phone in my name and a cell phone in my name.

The cops couldn't care less.
So I got both phones shut off and that's all I could do.

Jose Said:

Parent's won't give me car whichi is in my name?

We Answered:

Go to the DMV and get a duplicate title. This will void the original title. Most DMV's can print the duplicate title on the spot. In my state it cost's $35.00

The title is the owner-ship document - not the loan.

Once you have the title showing that you are the owner - not your parents -- go to the police again.

Or.....go to the dealership and get another key made for the car (I am assuming that you don't have one) and re'po the car yourself.

If you are 19 -- yours is the only name on the title -- then yes, it is theft.

***Edit***please note I said that I am assuming you do not have a key and told you to get a key made for the car. Here, I'll clarify what I told you to do.

Therefore, go to a dealer for the make of your car. (If it's a Ford -- go to the nearest Ford Dealer. Give them your VIN number (its found on a plate on the dash - you see it through the front windshield - usually on the driver side.) Depending on the age/make of the vehicle, the dealer may be able to MAKE OR ORDER YOU A REPLACEMENT KEY. They do not need the car to do this. Then go and get your car.
Of course, you will have to pay for the key and get someone to give you a ride over there. You will probably need to take proof of owership for the car.
