To do so, you are likely going to need to obtain and present a limited power of attorney to execute the application on the buyer's behalf. The power of attorney should specify the purpose (to obtain temporary vehicle registration on the buyer's behalf) a date range only during which the P.O.A. will be effective, and the vehicle's VIN.

The P.O.A. should also include a provision allowing you to cancel the temporary registration on his behalf and an affidavit by the buyer attesting that the identification, insurance, and any other information he provides you to affect obtaining temporary registration are legal and valid.

A much-better alternative, and one that alleviates you of all potential responsibility (in the event the buyer has some untoward purpose in mind for the vehicle) would be to obtain all of the necessary applications and conduct the transaction in the parking lot of a local DMV office during business hours when would be able to either complete the purchase and remove your plates and the buyer can obtain temporary ones or, if the sale doesn't "go through", you can simply drive away with nothing to undo.
