You must make all switches within 30 days except the insurance. That has to be done quicker. Contact your insurance company for advice. "In both of our names". If the title reads Mary OR John, you may switch without Johns signature. If it says Mary AND John, you will need John's signature

If you're asking how long it takes to get a title insurance commitment in place, it really depends on the title company you are using.

I've gotten some commitments back within hours of request, on a simple refinance.

On a purchase, however, they usually need to see the actual abstract. Tracking that down, getting it out of archives, and shipping it to your title company can often take a few days. On a purchase, I don't bother calling to check on my commitment unless 5 business days have passed since my request. On a refinance, I wait 48 hours.

The the insurance is in force the minute you sign the mortgage documents.
