Home Contents Insurance

Raymond Said:

Whats the point of Home contents insurance if you have warranties on gadgets vice/versa?

We Answered:

A warranty usually only covers mechanical breakdown or defects.

Home contents insurance doesn't cover mechanical breakdown or defects, but will cover things like fire and theft - which are NOT covered under the warranty.

Jerry Said:

if your child loses something valuable, can you file a claim for it under home contents insurance?

We Answered:

IF ( and I say IF) it were covered, it would be subject to your deductible on your policy - which is probably higher than the value of the items lost. But, sorry "LOST" is NOT on of the perils that insurance companies insure against.

Let this be a learning lesson to your child and DON'T replace them!! Maybe when you DO decide to replace them, they will take better care of them.

Chances are they were stolen by your child's friends anyway!!

Is my room covered by home and contents insurance?

We Answered:

You would need to check on the insurance policy.

Why didn't they want to make a claim for your things? If they agree to make a claim on this occasion, perhaps you should be making a contribution to the insurance or take out your own insurance in the future.

Part of your investigation could include how the burglar entered - was this something which the owner of the property should have thought about - e.g. insufficient security on doors or windows.

Wade Said:

Can you claim lost goods on your home contents insurance?

We Answered:

If all you have is a standard homeowners and the watch was not endorsed onto the policy-- there will be no coverage for losing it or throwing it out.

The standard homeowners is a named peril coverage. That means, that in order for the loss to be covered the peril has to be specifically listed. Perils include: fire, lighting, etc. There is no peril that covers losing it.

If the watch was endorsed on the policy (and to do that you have to take a current jewelers appraisal to the insurance company) mysterious disappearance is covered.

If you are not sure what you have -- call your agent.

Home Contents Insurance Valuation?

We Answered:

Depends if you have specified items of exceptional value such a jewellery, paintings, antiques., these can be separately shown on your policy.... excluding these maybe £30,000 should cover it....go around with a calculator and work out how much the main things would cost...carpets throughout, curtains, furniture, electrical goods, cutlery, bedding, beds, pots and pans, will be surprised how much it is...better to have more than less and generally insurance companies will not pay out more than a specified percentage on one item...
Also check if the Policy is linked to inflation, or on a new for old basis...lots to look into.
