Driving Car FROM Canada TO USA - Never to return?

We Answered:

You have to talk to US customs to make sure the vehicle is allowed into the US, and to find out applicable taxes. If you don't title it in your home state, you can't insure it, EVER, you can't change your mind and register it, EVER, and you can't sell it, or give it away, or will it to anybody, EVER, because they couldn't register/insure it either. Why would anybody buy a car to drive into the garage and ignore, forever? Even if you plan on using it as a show car, you have to protect yourself by getting title.

Registering salvaged title car in Mexico?

We Answered:

You can call the Mexican consulate and they should be able to answer your questions.

I have a client that buys cars in Texas and drives them to the border and meets his Dad. His Dad then takes the cars into Mexico and sells them....and I don't think this guys has any problems with salvage titles.

I have even heard reports that a lot of the cars that were damaged along the coast by Hurricane Katrina have started showing up in Mexico and Belize.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

Can I import my car for my spouse?

We Answered:

Without knowing what province your husband lives in it's difficult to give you an exact answer, however any jurisdiction will require that you sign the current registration/certificate of title over to your husband. As well you should hand write a bill of sale indicating that you are selling the vehicle (include year, make, model and VIN) to your husband including the amount (if it's zero then say it's a gift). This should be enough to transfer the vehicle into his name in any province, of course he will have to complete all the paper work (both the Canadian Border services forms and provincial forms), do all the federal and provincial inspections and may have to pay federal and provincial taxes/excise.
