California Title Insurance Companies

Tara Said:

California, salvage title, can I ride it that way?

We Answered:

It is NOT legal to ride like that. Salvage title (if indeed it was applied for) means the vehicle is NOT operable and has no current license sticker. You will have to go to the DMV and apply for a "Revived Salvage Title". this will include an inspection of the machine in order to qualify it for a plate and legal registration. see web site below.

Can an at-fault driver's insurance co. require me to register a total-loss car in another state before paying?

We Answered:

That makes absolutely no sense. That would just delay things further. No offense, but are you sure you are understanding everything? Ask them to explain why. If you aren't satisfied, ask for their manager. If no results, contact the California insurance dept.

Louise Said:

Can I fight an auto insurance company, to prevent my car from being declared a total loss, in California?

We Answered:

Yes, this can be fought and won.
First, take the car to an independant body shop and get their best estimate, in fact, two or three might even be better.
Now, who is at fault in this accident, you or the other party?a if the other party was at fault, then have your car fixed at the lowest price shop, and file a small claims suit against both the driver of the other car, their insurance company, and your own if they refused to settle.
I speak from experience in two such cases. The last the insurance company tried to total my vehicle stating the cost of repairs totaled over $3000.00 and the value was only $2000.00.
The charges listed on their estimate was proven to be very much inflated, as a new fender was included at over $500. with paint and installation. ( A new fender was purchased at $41.00, and installed in 20 minutes) and that was the only repair necessary plus a wheel alignment at a cost of $65.00. When this was presented at small claims court, the insurance company paid without any further delay.
The problem lies with the law whereas insurance is compulsory, so they get away with anything and everything, as there is no control over their actions.

Philip Said:

Should insurance companies be sued for Katrina cars?

We Answered:

One should always do a carfax check or something similar to check the title. I would imagine it would tell you if the car has been damaged or not. However, if it's true that the insurance companies are hiding it, it might not show up. But then if that's the case, how do you prove that the car was a Katrina car? I dunno...

Randall Said:

Re-title & register vehicle in California (new owner)?

We Answered:

Since you are a legal resident of Nevada, you should title, license and insure in Nevada. It would be cheaper. Being a full time college student living out of state allows you to use your Nevada address for all of this.
