The amount of dept (at her age) is not as important as the amount of monthly payments. When she goes her credit card debt goes. Also, you can call each lender/credit card company, tell them she is recently widowed and you are helping to negotiate a smaller monthly payment. They will do this because they would rather have some money than none at all. Finally, make sure none of the children's names are on the credit cards so they the children don't inherit the debt. As for the land, it is best to deed it now to the child who will inherit it so that the kids don't have to go through potentially years of probate court to settle the deed (if there is anything left after all her debtors are done). She can still live there just change the name on the deed. This will also be advantageous if she ever might need Medicaid for future (can't have assets ts to get Medicaid). If no child wants the land, sell it now so that she can have money to live on and pay for possible upcoming medical expenses.

Bugger manners- people who LIVE by them have never had obnoxious relatives.

Just tell them to shove their shower where the sun don't shine. You don't need people like that as 'family'! I threw 'manners' out the window after my wedding and told my family to shove it and that I know longer wanted to be part of the 'family' after the way they behaved regarding my wedding (RSVP'd would come, didn't show and left use nearly $500 out of pocket with catering expenses- didn't apologise either!)
I felt so LIBERATED after telling them to shove it! Because I was rude to them I no longer feel guilty about not inviting them to 'family' events like my son's first birthday party, or the anniversary dinner we have planned, I don't have to deal with stilted Easters and Christmases, I can spend that time with my husbands family and our friends and actually ENJOY it! I do have relatives that I still speak to, but they've also told the rest of the family to shove it and come to my inlaws events which saves the Holiday run around!
