$96k will probably result in around $70k in take home pay. To live in a Manhattan two bedroom apartment could cost up to almost half that in a decent area. Food for your family could be anther $200 a week, but doesn't have to be that high. The good news is that transportation is cheap. You don't need a car and you can buy unlimited access to the subways and buses for under $100 a month.

Costs in either the outer boroughs or New Jersey is considerable cheaper. Rent may be 30% less and grocery prices can be reduced by nearly that much if you take advantage of all the buying opportunities available. Store specials and warehouse stores, for example. You most likely will want a car, though.

Dog insurance? This is not necessary, but a license is required but that fee is nominal.
