There's no where NEAR enough information to begin to give you advice. You don't mention if:

your stepfather has life insurance that would pay out
how much money mom has
if mom qualifies for, or has, disability insurance
if you even want to try keeping the house, or how much equity mom has in it
how much "stuff" or value for what they own
if your mom is at full recovery
if mom can live on her own, or needs nursing care for the rest of her life


So you should probably talk to a financial planner, an estate planner, an accountant, and maybe an estate attorney (need to get guardianship of mom?) to figure out what you should do.
