Unemployment Insurance Premiums

Troy Said:

Is it normal for employers to try to make their employees feel bad about applying for unemployment?

We Answered:

Unemployment cost the employers a lot of money. Each time an employee files, their costs go up. Are you a seasonal employee? Do you get salary for your job which includes your time off in summer? Teachers in our state don't file for unemployment, they get extra money in their paycheck for having the summer off, so they don't collect unemployment. Not sure if that's your situation. Your employer should expect you to collect. One working day a week isn't enough to live on.

Unemployment Insurance - how does it affect the employer?

We Answered:

You are correct. Since company A was your last employer and the company that laid you off, they would pay the increase in premiums. However, if company B were also to lay you off, they may find that their premiums increase as well. As long as you continue working for them, they should see no increase.

Is it fair that women have to pay higher premiums for unemployment insurance than men?

I agree with you.

It's fair, because women are whiny.

Why do retired people over 65 in Canada have to pay unemployment insurance?

We Answered:

Hello, I can easily answer this question for you.

The key word is Employer...your mother is still an employee, regardless of her age, she continues to receive money from an income source to whom she is NOT RELATED.

Most types of renumeration paid are subject to EI premiums withheld from an employer, but there are a few exceptions.

The 2 CRA websites explaining which types of income are subject to or exempt from EI are listed below:

I hope this information helps you.

Approximate monthly premium for State Unemployment insurance and the coverage?

We Answered:

Are you basically asking how much your check would be if you collect unemployment benefits?

It all depends on how much you were making each week, and how many dependents you have.

I cannot calculate how much you would get. Its a certain percentage of your base pay. You can go onto your state's unemployment office website and they will have the formula posted somewhere on the website.

You should apply right away if you lost your job. If you quit, you are not eligible for unemployment. If you got fired for misconduct, you will also not be eligible to collect.

Good luck :)

Who pays for unemployment benefits?

We Answered:

You are correct in how it works. However like any insurance if it's used the rates can go up but only for your future premiums you certainly do not get a bill instantly or retroactive. In any case collect the unemployment you are entitled to it and the cost in future premiums to his employer is minimal. A more likely scenario is that the owners didn't pay it along whit other expenses that are a normal cost of doing business.
