Healthy Pets Insurance or Pet Pals?

We Answered:

Hi there...most pet insurer's only provide preventative care and rarely offer enough financial assistance in urgent care. Based on some of the research noted on the Internet, some pet insurance agencies can go out of business leaving the insured without any coverage so it's best to select from companies who are financially doing well and been around for some time as well.

Most of my clients opt to put aside a monthly allotment of funds in a savings account that can earn interest for pet care and emergencies. Those who do this generally find that this is more ideal especially in times when there is an emergency situation.

ok pet insurance?????????????????

See links below to ASDA UK and various pages within the site. If you read the FAQ page, I think you will be very much informed.

On page 7 of the online policy statement, you will see a chart of COVERAGE LIMITS for each of the Plans (Value, Standard, Superior). In the right-hand column, you will see that only a couple of items, one of which pertains only to dogs, has an Excess value stated in £'s. So, I scrolled to page 11, where the policy definitions are located and found that an EXCESS is "means the amount You are required to pay as the first part of certain claims made under
the Policy." In the U.S., we would call it a "deductible".

So, if you have a £60 excess, as you state in your question/explanation, then, you have to pay the first £60 in vet fees before the insurance coverage starts.
ALSO, PLEASE NOTE THAT the Coverage Limits shown on page 7 of the policy manual shows the excess at £65, instead of £60. So, you might want to call and clarify that with them!!! You don't want any more surprises. (I'm figuring that this £60 excess is already ONE surprise!!)

On the FAQ page, there's the question: Is my pet covered immediately. The answer given is that ACCIDENTS are covered immediately, but that ILLNESSES are not covered during the first 10 days of the policy." Also, beware of PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS as, according to the FAQ, such conditions (i.e., any conditions OR symptoms that existed before the policy or began in those 1st 10 days of the policy ARE NOT COVERED!!!).
Finally, I've provided the contact page for the Pet

Insurance department. It is open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. They stipulate the following about phone charges,,quoted from that page:
"Maximum call charge from a BT landline is 4p per minute. Calls from other networks may vary. Please check with your network operator."

Hope this demystifies your pet insurance a bit.

I do recommend you read the policy manual at the link below, read all the FAQs, clicking on any blue-lettered links that occur within those answers (that's how I found the Policy manual), and call the contact number for clarification. If you DO call, be sure to have your policy info nearby and write down any questions you have IN ADVANCE so that you don't forget anything.

Good luck and God bless!

Is Pet Insurance worth it?

We Answered:

I have it and I think it's totally worth it.
Savings account pros: You get to keep all the money if you don't use it; Cons: if you've only been saving for a few months and have $90 then what happens when you get a $2000 bill? or even $500? Also, what if you use up all the money and then your pet has continual issues, like cancer or allergies that are ongoing?

Pet insurance cons: You might not get all the money back that you put in, you have to wait to be reimbursed; Pros: You can go with any vet, you might get back much more than you put in, peace of mind

Especially since you have a puppy, I think pet insurance is a great option. You never know if your puppy will get into trouble, this seems to be the most expensive time of a dog's life, and also you can be sure that you're preventing preexisting conditions. (since no pet insurance company covers preexisting conditions)

I have pet insurance through Trupanion for my dog. I like it b/c it covers 90% of the actual bill (no benefits schedules) and they don't have per-claim or per-year or per-incident limits. They also cover ongoing conditions, whereas some companies will stop covering it after the first year.

I would definitely suggest to do lots of research, check out petinsurancereview.com and be sure to read all the policies and ask LOTS of questions! Don't sign up for something until you completely understand it.
Good luck with your new baby!
