Premium Car Rental Insurance

Natalie Said:

Sratched my rental car today, can I call and add insurance?

We Answered:

No, it's too late to add the insurance. You have to do it immediately upon renting. Yes, they will know. I rented a car one weekend and while driving on the highway, a small pebble struck the windshield and caused a tiny crack. As soon as I drove up with the car, this guy walked right up to the windshield and pointed to the crack. They charged me $28 dollars to fix the crack although I lied and said I did not crack it.

Nancy Said:

Car Insurance Premium?

We Answered:

It's impossible to give you an exact answer without knowing what the coverage limits of your policy are, what the value of your Honda is or what the value of your minivan is. Read your last bill from your insurance company. It should itemize each type of coverage you have individually.

Liability is usually the most expensive part of you coverage and that usually won't change much unless your Honda was a high performance car. Even if it was depending on your previous driving record the increase for high performance might not be very much. Collision is usually the second most expensive component. Driving an expensive car doesn't change the premium very much because cars are rarely totaled. Most accidents result in less than $10,000 so no matter what you're driving, unless it's an exotic, premiums won't change much.

Theft coverage is actually a very small part of your premium, I'll guess less than $50 per year so if your argument is based solely on the cost of theft coverage your premium wouldn't change but a few dollars. Rental insurance doesn't include theft so your theft insurance is probably covering the rental.

You may be correct in assuming you should be paying less considering what your presently driving but the difference probably isn't much. It's probably not even worth doing anything about considering the short period of time you'll be driving the rental.

Justin Said:

Does your car insurance premium go up if you have a claim that didn't involve others but was over $1400?

We Answered:

Okay. I'm guessing when you say "claim that didn't involve others" that we're talking about a one-car collision, yes?

If that's the case, your damages will be paid out through your collision coverage and any amount, regardless of how big that claim is, will increase your premium. Only way it won't is if your company has Accident Forgiveness and you haven't had any accidents or violations in the past three years. If you don't have Accident Forgiveness, you're out of luck.

Premium isn't tied to the amount of the actual claim when it comes to collision. In some areas the amount of liability paid can change the surcharge amount, but it's different when it comes to your own car.

And BTW, rental cars are covered under a different coverage that actually doesn't give you an increase to use. So you're paying for rental coverage and might as well use it, as that is a no-surcharge coverage.

Daniel Said:

Does your car insurance premium go up if a claim is filed against you, but is dropped? ?

We Answered:

If he pays, and the insurance doesn't, they won't raise his premiums since they did not pay out.

And of course they would contact him once you filed a claim against him, that's the way it works.

Stephen Said:

Real Estate Investment - Home Insurance - is it like car insurance where a Claim can affect premium?

We Answered:

You can easily check your quotes in internet, for example here - homeinsurance.awardspace.us

Naomi Said:

I have scratched the rental car during the business trip.?

We Answered:

No it won't be on your record as the company insurance will take care of this, they just need your details as you were the driver at the time of accident. They might ask you to pay the excess.

Curtis Said:

I was involved in a rental car accident, will this increase my auto insurance premium?

We Answered:

Unfortunately it, more than likely, will because it actually doesn't matter if it was your fault or not because it shows that you are "accident prone" and therefore you premium (in general) will get raised. it stinks but its a fact of auto insurance.

Discuss It!
