Pet Insurance Premiums

trupanion pet insurance is it good?

We Answered:

I have Trupanion for my dog and I think they are great! I say go for it.

They are really friendly and they process claims really quickly. Plus I like that they don't have benefits schedules so they pay the whole claim. It's good that you're looking into it while your kitten is young so that anything that happens will be covered! Good luck!

Pet insurance for my bullmastiff... pet plan, more than, the kennel club or another?

We Answered:

I would agree with the first person that answered, well for the most part. Pets are definitely worth it, they don't have to be expensive, they are part of our family and we love them. Insurance is just as expensive for animals as it is for people and has just as many flaws.
In our practice, I have actually not seen anyone who has insurance on their pets. I have read over a few plans and didn't like what I saw. By the time you've paid the premiums for a year, you've already more than paid for the cost of yearly necessities...vaccinations, flea/tick and heartworm medications, etc. The plans I saw would really only cover anywhere from $500-$900 for a major medical procedure, such as a broken leg or foreign body ingestion. That nowhere near covers the cost but definitely would help...until you look at what you've paid in monthly premiums. Seems they kind of cancel each other out.
Any kind of crisis can arise when you own pets, believe me, I've seen it all. It is great that you are taking steps to help protect your pet, but I would agree that you should start a savings account, it would earn interest or just put money aside at home. Best of luck to you and your pooch, bullmastiffs are awesome dogs!

Will my pet insurance premium increase after a minor claim?

We Answered:

it depends on the insurer. We have six dogs insured with More Than and one of our claims in total was for 3,500 GBP. We paid 70.00 GBP and our insurance never went up, we also had a dog bill for 0ver 6,400.00 GBP and the premiums did not move either. Our insurance for each dog is an average of 135.00 GBP per year?
Some insurers you have to claim for each illness before a given time.

Pet Insurance?

We Answered:

I have heard that VPI is a really bad insurance. I have been checking on it for my dog and it's VERY expensive. The ones that pay for everything are 50.00 month + with a 75.00 deductible per visit. I took my dog to the vet, the visit, shot, and medicine was only 73.00. My dog has been dx with asthma, now it's a pre existing condition. The only insurance I can get is 100.00 a month and they pay after 12 months. To me it's not worth it unless your pet is old and at risk for arthritis or cancer, blindness, etc. I would take your 60.00 and put it in a savings account and let it earn interest. Unless your dogs break a bone or need major surgery, it's not worth it. Even if you had insurance, they only pay 2 or 3000.00 max for surgery...so good luck on your decision.

The following website doesn't review all pet insurance carriers, but it's a good start:

For people who have or have had pet medical insurance: Who is/was your carrier?

We Answered:

I definitely think Pet Insurance is worth it!
I got my dog Pet Plan pet insurance, and it is amazing. I have 0% coinsurance and a $50 deductible. They even cover hereditary conditions like hip dysplasia, which most other insurance companies dont cover. They also cover each condition for life, with no limit on time or cost. Other insurance companies will only cover a specific condition up to a certain dollar amount.
My puppy is only 9 months old and she just had a Mast Cell Tumor (Cancer) removed. The biopsy and tumor removal surgery has cost almost $1,000 so far, and ALL but my deductible was covered. So i only paid $50! We do not know yet if she will need Chemo, but that will also be covered.
She has also been in the ER for eating gum, and that too was 100% covered aside from my deductible.
I really like PetPlan because they are the only company that gives you the option to choose your coinsurance and deductible. You pick what % of the treatment you are responsible for and the deductible you pay for each incident.
I have the the Gold Plan (the best one) and it is $34 a month. Other plans are cheaper. The Gold plan also pays for Boarding and Kennel Fees, Advertising and Rewards if your dog goes missing, the price you paid for the dog if it does not return, the price of the dog if he/she must be put down or dies due to illness or injury, and travel expenses that cannot be reimbursed if you must cancel due to your animals illness or injury. Claims are alse reimbursed within 2 weeks (usually faster)
I love Petplan and they are sooo helpful! My dog also has chronic ear infections and they pay for every visit and all the medication!
So, if you have petplan and your dog gets hurt or sick, they will cover it. And if you need to go to an after hours ER vet clinic, they will also pay for this if it is to save your dogs life. If it is not life threatening, they will pay 70% (because you could have went to your regular vet).
Overall its great! I chose it after months of research and talking to vets.
