Insurance Premiums After Accident

Elmer Said:

Did your insurance premium go up after an accident that was your fault?

We Answered:

Yes!

Jane Said:

How do insurance company figure out the premium after an accident?

We Answered:

Neither, it has to do with their evaluation of the risk you pose to them as a driver. No telling what they will decide, or what if any increase there will be at renewal time. Sometimes even the agent doesn't know.

Daniel Said:

About how much do car insurance premiums rise after a minor accident?

We Answered:

Sometimes nothing, if the payout amount was under the "threshhold limit" or if you have "first accident forgiveness" on your policy.

You need to ask your agent for YOUR specific information.

Grace Said:

How long will it take for your auto insurance premiums to go down after and accident and a speeding ticket?

We Answered:

This may vary from company to company, but, a good rule of thumb is 36 months for charges. Some States only allow the increase in premium for AT FAULT ACCIDENTS and won't charge for moving violations. A company has the option to file their rates and underwriting that allows them to REJECT you if you have too many moving violations.

As part of their underwriting period (normally 60 days) they will run all sorts of reports on you to determine your overall driving history. Although they might look back for five years or more, they normally won't raise your premium for OLDER incidents....but they can choose to deny you coverage.

Keep in mind, also, that most insurance companies run CREDIT SCORE. This can have an adverse affect on your insurance premiums. I have seen clients with DUIs and SPOTLESS CREDIT get lower rates than someone with a CLEAN driving record with a few blemishes on their credit!

Trying to compare YOUR rate with your friends' rates can make you CRAZY!! The best thing to do is find yourself a LOCAL independent agent that will work with you and try to help you control your insurance costs.

Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps!

Kyle Said:

How much does increase in premiums for insurance, after an accident last normally?

We Answered:

3-5 years depending on the company and how many other offenses or accidents is on the drivers history. Ask the company directly how long they surcharge for.
