Insurance Premium Increase After Accident

Melvin Said:

Premium increase after a car scratching incident?

We Answered:

Just call your insurance company and ask them.

Also ask what would happen to your rates if you have another incident within the next 6 months? 1 year? 2 years?

I've often found it is better to just pay out of pocket for small incidents such as yours.

Can my insurance company increase my monthly Direct Debit after an accident?

We Answered:

It does seem rather odd.... is it that you opted for a monthly renewable policy rather than an annual policy payable in installments ?

As you say you'd expect the cost to go up at the next renewal date and if you have a monthly renewable policy ....unfortunately, that's the next month. Those kind of policies are usually the cheaper/high risk (young drivers etc) ones, and you can kind of see why now, if you claim your costs go up straight away, if you don't you pay a bit less across the course of the year.

However, those types of policy are rare in the UK you do quote an annual rather than monthly premium figure, and I'm guessing you paid 2 months worth when you took the policy out otherwise the numbers don't work. If it was an annual policy (and most UK motor policies are), I can't see how they can put your premium up, cancel maybe (though unlikely) but not increase. You'd have to get into all sorts of nonsense about agreeing increased rates etc when selling the policy and UK insurance doesn't work like that (not often anyway).

The other possibility I can think of is did some information come to light during the claims proceedure that didn't tally with what was on the policy quote form, change of address maybe ?

Either way I wouldn't just pay it without question, I mean it's not like insurers don't make mistakes, they're only human (contrary to popular belief) after all!

Contact the insurer and ask under what section of the policy they are entitled to raise your premium... it could well be a simple admin cock up. If you don't like the answer come back and post again for advice on complaints proceedures.

Oh by the way, if you do post again try to make sure you use the UK section or you'll get a lot of irrelevant American answers and few useful UK ones.

Good luck

How many times does the premium increase after a car accident?

We Answered:

insurance varies from state to state -- in my state and my insurance company, the accident will be charged for three years no matter how much is paid to the other party. the premium increase will be the same even if the payout is $600 or $60,000 or more..

Shelly Said:
