Health Insurance Premium

Beth Said:

Does getting benifit causes increase in health insurance premium?

We Answered:

Not if you have an individual policy. The premium might go up but only if it goes up for everyone with that policy in your area. In this case the premium will go up if you use it or not. If you have a group policy it might. Small group policies' rates are based upon the history of the group so if one person has major medical bills the premium can go up 3 or 4 hundred percent in most states.

Erika Said:

Can Aetna raise my health insurance premium?

We Answered:

Some insurance companies have rate-guarantee policies that will lock in your original rate for a certain period of time, but many don’t. Unfortunately, it is not terribly uncommon to be hit with a rate increase like this. You can be sure it wasn’t anything personal – they probably raised rates across the board in your area.

Since it sounds like you are paying for your own coverage (rather than getting it through an employer) you can take this as an opportunity to make sure you’ve still got the right health insurance plan and are getting the most for your health insurance dollars. Talk to a licensed agent or visit an online agency like eHealthInsurance.com (where I work) to review quotes from leading companies and see if there’s another plan that might better match your needs and budget. If you want to talk with one of our licensed agents for personal advice, give us a call at 1-800-977-8860.

Carlos Said:

Is it fair that my health insurance premium should increase 39% in less than a month?

We Answered:

Use the free market to compete for your health insurance. Get other quotes from other companies. Once you have found some other quotes which in many cases will be cheaper than your current insurance, then call your current insurance company and tell them you have quotes from other companies and you are going to switch if they don't match your quotes.

You might also consider high deductible health insurance. Say $5000 deductible. You will get a lower cost coverage, but you will want to save the difference in premium in a health savings account. The amount you contribute to the health savings account is tax deductible up to i believe $5800 for a married couple. This is what I use and review my insurance policies annually getting other quotes to keep premiums down.
