1 wife could loose job[and ins] could change jobs and get no/crappy ins
2 to sign back up it costs a lot..once your eligible and don't sign up the longer u wait the more it costs
3 with private ins the part a&b pays part of your deductible....

read your SS/disability hand book before you do anything...read it carefully!

Samuel Said:

Can I enroll in employer short term disability insurance even though I declined it 2 1/2 yr ago?

We Answered:

Your friend in the insurance business is too quick to say "false". If the employee pays, is it a policy they take on with each new hire? It might be a private policy, and not a group.

If you HAVE to take it when you hire on, and you didn't then, and want to now, a main reason for refusal to let you, is adverse selection - example, you're planning on going out on maternity leave this year, and want the coverage for that, and then will drop it again. Can't make money that way, so maybe the terms of the policy are, it's available at hiring time only. Or maybe there's a year wait before maternity is covered (a year before conception, that is).

I'd ask the HR for where it says that in writing. But there's not much else you can do, unless you want to find out which company it is, and complain in writing to the state insurance department.

John Said:

Do afro-americans pay higher premium for health insurance? car insurance? disability insurance?

We Answered:

No, they do not.

First of all, there are absolute laws in place, preventing discrimination based on race.

Second, from a practical point of view, how would you implement it? America is very much a melting pot - do you get a pantone color card, and everyone who's skin is a particular shade gets charged a different rate? Because two kids with mixed lineage, and identical parentage, could have WILDLY different shades of skin!

Not only is there no statistical data showing people of one race at a higher risk, but here in the USA, race is not objective, for the most part - it's a self identity thing. And just like when people were allowed to declare themselves nonsmokers to get a nonsmoking discount on their homeowners policy (guess what? NO ONE SMOKED!!), everyone would declare themselves whatever race gets the lowest rates. And without genetic testing, you have to take them at their word.

Race here in the USA is mostly a political tool, used by politicians, to manipulate the voters. That's what *I* think.
