Lorraine Said:

No claims, yet car insurance premium still rising. Am i paying for?

We Answered:

Covering uninsured drivers
Whiplash payouts - genuine as well as false
No win no fee

It's no wonder there are unisured drivers when they get caught and pay the fine - it's cheaper than insurance. That's what pisses me off.

How much would my insurance premium rise be? Car accident.?

We Answered:

If it's u'r 1st ticket and accident u should: 1) go to court and see about going to "traffic school." It has a small charge attached to it, but the ticket will not be on your record for insurance company purposes. If u pay the ticket, you can expect a 15% surcharge for the next five years on your auto policy (possibly only three yrs). There is nothing u can do about the accident. It doesn't matter if they pay $1 or $100,000.00. Fault is fault. You can expect a 20% surcharge for an at-fault accident. Again, 3-5 years. Contact u'r insurance company's underwriting department and they can give you specifics, but u can get rid of the ticket issue by going to traffic school. Good luck.

Insurance premium rise?

Direct Line are part of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group, and you only have to open a newspaper to see what a mess the group is in. They had to be bailed out by the tax payer due to huge debts, and now have huge loans to pay back, the cost of which they will have to pass on to customers, so the days of cheap insurance from Direct Line look to be over.

Having said that, there is a general increase in premiums across the insurance business because the market as a whole is so poor, with high volumes of claims and increased operating costs, so you should expect an increase from most insurers, although it should certainly not be as much as yours.

I would always advise people to shop around at renewal, even if they are happy with their quote. Just because an insurer is the cheapest one year doesn't mean they are the cheapest the next, and by shopping around, you would be surprised just how much you can save.

I would check the terms and conditions of your policy. Usually, when you renew, the insurer gives you a 14 day cooling off period, in which you can change your mind. If you cancel within those 14 days, they will just charge you for the cover provided, and refund the rest, and you can then insure with someone who offers more realistic pricing.
