The reasoning behind this(and the insurance companies have the numbers/charts to prove it)is that people with poor credit have a higher potential for making a claim, or for making a fraudulent claim to get cash because they have financial problems.
This does not mean that you will, but unfortunately other dishonest people have ruined it for the rest of us honest people and cost the insurance industry hundreds of millions of dollars a year.
Any company that asks for your social security number is running a credit check.
I believe that California is the only State that does not allow companies to use credit as a rating factor.

We Answered:

Look, very few companies try to "find a way out of paying you". All those stories you hear, are about people who tried to find a way to trick a lower rate out of the insurance company, and they got caught. It doesn't HAPPEN that way.

Not all insurance companies write in all states. No one ranks them, by "good", as it's SO subjective. But you CAN check with your state insurance department website, to see which companies have the most COMPLAINTS. In general, State Farm writes the MOST auto insurance policies in the USA, and has the lowest PERCENTAGE of complaints. I also think that USAA does a bang up job, but you have to be active military or police, or retired military, or child of a retired military person, to qualify.

You can ask your ex employer for a letter saying that you have have driven their vehicles for x years without a claim, which should go towards a few extrs years NCB form your insurance.

We have State Farm and they are very fast with clam payments. When our car was totaled last year, (while it was parked in our driveway, no less), the adjustor went to the lot the car had been towed to the day after it happened, to check it over, and brought a check to our house the next day.

It depends on your state. I live in WA and I believe that all companies order the score. Sometimes even with the bad score the rate isn't so bad if you have a good driving record.I would try them all just to see. You have a bad score already, what do you have to lose? Good luck.
