I'd have to recommend USAA (if you qualify) or State Farm (if you don't qualify for USAA) based upon what I've seen about how they handle their own policyholders' claims.

you can change at anytime, and there may be a small premium due from the time you renewed to the time you cancel your policy. So I guess the answer to your question is no it does not make a difference so if you can get it cheaper elsewhere go for it. But don't cancel with your current carrier until you have coverage in place with the other company.
