Now you see why Massachusetts just passed a law that basically ditched the private market for small employers.

You are finding out that each state has separate insurance laws that require insurers to cover different benefits.

States that have a high level of benefit mandates and then also have a high level of regulatory control over rates have a difficult time attracting insurers to want to sell there.

When you have very few companies selling, there is no competition and the price goes through the roof...which is exactly what happened in Massachusetts. The costs got so high it was hurting small employers and individuals.

The crisis got to the point that the state has decided to ditch the small market and go to a statewide mandate where the state will pay for the care of those who can't afford it.

You are also finding that Illinois has many competitors and lesser rate regulation which means a better deal for consumers.

I would say around $250 a month. But it could also be a lot more or a lot less depending on whether you have group health insurance through your employer or individual insurance.

Parents that cant afford insurance for their children can qualify for programs like CHIPS, where it is considerably less for families to provide their newborn child with coverage.
