What Home Insurance Covers

Salvador Said:

Providing home insurance covers for accidental damage caused by pets, to what extent will they repair to?

We Answered:

A.

The insurance company owes to repair/replace the damaged part. If a door can be found that fits and is close in appearance- that is what they owe you. They do not owe to replace all doors. Some time's I'll compromise and allow to repaint all cabinets to so the replacement door is not so obvious. But the company does not owe that and my company gives me the authority to do that.

Most policies (in the US anyway) state that the insurance company does not owe you a exact decorative match.

Additionally, US policies do not cover damage by domestic animals. I don't know what the UK policies cover.

If you have filed a claim - your best bet is to follow up with the adjuster handling your claim.

I'm in escrow right now and have to purchase home insurance. Anybody have any recommendations?

First responder is correct, BUT do you have a car? If so, if your insurer offers homeowners, that could result in a discount to you (multiple insurances same company). Personally I use State Farm. Your purchase price will give the agent an idea of how much insurance you need. You will then go over what personal property is covered--there will be low limits on SOME things (jewelry or such) and if you need more, bump it up. You want to make sure your liability limit is good--what if someone comes to your house and your dog bites him? What if they fall down your stairs? Homeowners also covers some THINGS that could be in your car and get ripped off. You can save some depending on what you set as the DEDUCTIBLE for a claim. Be smart and have a fairly high one as insurance companies a few years ago started getting really uppity about claims and some cancelled folks or shot their premiums through the roof for a legit claim. They seem to have calmed down some, but you never know.
If this is not a new house with a builder's warranty, consider getting something like American Home Shield in case you've got problems.

Enjoy!

what does pearl home insurance cover?

We Answered:

i believe you mean covered "peril". it means that any damage to your home or property must be caused by a covered peril in order to have coverage on it. Example...you have a computer that is hit by lightening and no longer works, that would be covered because lightening is a covered peril. your computer is old and just does not work anymore...not covered. so in answer to your question about your laptop...it depends. did you drop it in the tub? spill a glass of water on it? or did the roof in your house leak and rain came in it onto your laptop? call your agent and find out if its covered. most likely, it will not be covered for water damage unless you endorsed computer coverage onto your policy (which most people do not do). it really depends on what caused the water damage. most likely you have a deductible that would apply if it is covered, and may make claiming it pointless. if you have a 500 or 1000 ded, its probably better to not claim it and buy a new computer on your own since you can get on for about $800

Ethel Said:

what does pearl home insurance exactly cover you????? Does it cover you for the cost of plumbing work??

We Answered:

Pearl is an agency name, not a company. So, it's not their policy.

You need to call pearl and ask.

On a standard HO3 homeowners policy, the water damage from the leak would be covered, but not the cost to fix the plumbing. Pipes, no. Wax seal, no. damaged floorboards and laminate flooring, yes. OF COURSE, some policies now have an exclusion for water damage that occurs over a period of time, so if the toilet's been leaking for years, it could all be excluded.

What does home Insurance cover?

We Answered:

1) Their homeowners insurance will cover nothing because they are not liable. The thunderstorm caused the tree to fall, not them. The ONLY way they MAY be found liable is if the tree was dead & in danger of falling & they KNEW about it AND did nothing about it. You would have to PROVE they knew about it & the ONLY way to do that is if you sent them a certified letter telling them the tree was dead - & you would have to prove you did this BEFORE the tree came down.
Your insurance policy will pay for the debris removal up to a small set limit - I have seen mostly $500 - IF the tree hit your HOUSE or other covered structure. Then, they will only pay for the part of the tree that HIT your house, you are responsible for the part that didn't. If you have additional debris removal on your policy, you may get up to $500 for the removal of part of the tree that didn't hit the house. Your company will pay for damages to your house less your deductible. Your company will also probably pay for the damage to your fence. Now, you will probably not get anything for your grass & flowers if they were damaged. You may or may not get anything for your walkway.
Your policy states you need to mitigate your damages - which means if the tree caused a whole in your roof or broke a window, you would need to remove the tree & board up the window or roof to prevent the weather (or a burglar) from entering your home & causing more damage. You need to take pictures of the tree before you remove it to show where it was lying & what damage it may have done - you will also need to keep a receipts for temporary repairs.
2) You can't ask for anything else. This is a first party claim for damages to your own property on your own policy. There is NO liability. You CAN'T ask for any money for inconvenience...Sorry. All claims are incovenient, that is just a fact of life.
