What Does Umbrella Insurance Cover

Julio Said:

Pres. Obama's Universal Health Plan - How can we tell what will be covered?

We Answered:

First of all, Obama wants to make insurance more available to all. And change the system so that it is cheaper, and also so that the insurance companies find it harder to get out of paying for treatment. The system he is proposing looks similar to that which works in Holland and Switzerland where private companies are involved in providing insurance. For more information, see how the people there like it. Hint, Switzerland has not moved from it.

Second, of course universal health-cover sucks. That is why we in Western Europe have it. We think, hmm, our healthcare system sucks. I know, lets keep it. I guess that is the same with Japan and Canada as well.

FACT - the USA spends more on healthcare PER PERSON than any other nation on the planet.

FACT - the US has higher death rates for kids aged under five than western European countries with universal health coverage.

That means that a dead American four year old would have had a better chance of life if they were born in Canada, France, Cuba, Germany, Japan etc, all of which have universal health coverage.

Auto Insurance coverage -- How much Liability and Medical?

We Answered:

1 - liability coverage is very cheap. The difference between the 300 and the 500 is probably only dollars a year.

When you start an umbrella policy, the insurance company has certain limits that you have to have. Usually it is the highest that they have - (ie 25, 50, 100, 300, 500). They wont cover you until the first part has been attained - ie if they want you to have a limit of 500K and yours is only 300K they wont cover you until you hit the 500. (you would be responsible for the difference). I'm sure you have a respectable agent that would ensure that you are adequately covered to prevent this from happening.

As for the medical coverage - this would cover passengers in your car etc... There would also be a threshold that you would have to meet prior to the umbrella policy picking up the tab. I would recommend getting this coverage because it, like liability, is also very cheap.

How can I convince my parents to let us get a trampoline.?

We Answered:

I understand how hard it is to really want something and not being able to get it. It's tough. It's hard to know if your dad is being unreasonable or not. From what you've said in this question, your dad seems genuinely worried that you and your sister might have friends over sometime to play on the trampoline with you, and one of them might slip and fall through the holes at the edge (where the coils join at the metal frame). Lots of people have had serious life-threatening accidents on a trampoline. I guess the only way you're going to get one is to keep asking your dad or save up enough insurance money (liability or third-party) to be covered for anyone getting an injury.

I'm personally most concerned about the last sentence of your question. You said you can't ask your mom because she "doesn't have a mind of her own". That's a pretty harsh thing to say about your mom. If that is really the case, however, I'd be using the trampoline money for your mom to see a doctor and get a referral for some counselling or psychological medical help to assist your mom with her incredibly repressive condition.

Umbrella insurance: what does it cover?

We Answered:

Likely not. There's a "personal umbrella" and a "commercial umbrella". The personal umbrella, if it's a TRUE umbrella policy (many are not these days, they're really "excess liability") has an exclusion on it for business activities. It doesn't matter how small the business is - it's a business activity. If the candle was a GIFT, then your homeowners liability policy would be covering it first. Of course, if it's a gift, then you don't have the same standard of legal negligence, either, and it's harder to be sued.

For a commercial umbrella, she'd need the underlying general liabiltiy policy first, and frankly, you'd have to sell a heck of a lot of candles to be able to afford the liability premiums.

You should be discussing your options with YOUR AGENT, though.

Hugh Said:

Why can't I use umbrella insurance instead of auto insurance?

We Answered:

In many cases, you must have a minimum of a certain type of insurance (in this case, auto) before the umbrella will be required to kick in, so you need to find out what that minimum is in your case. In addition, umbrella insurance only applies to the liability portion, so you need to make sure your other levels of coverage are still adequate.

Rebecca Said:

condo insurance question?

We Answered:

Liabiltiy, is when it IS your fault. Umbrella, is ALSO when it is your fault. PROPERTY, you'll never get paid more than the PROPERTY LIMIT of your policy.

DELIBERATE damage - like ruining or burning down - is EXCLUDED from coverage. Liability will never pay YOU - only the guy that you hurt.

You need to sit down with your agent to go over this.

Discuss It!
