Received a rental car through insurance and got into an accident?

We Answered:

If you have full coverage, the insurance on your car usually covers the rental car just as if you were driving your own. Report it to your insurance company. Rental companies will try to charge you fees that your insurance company will know how to negotiate away or at least reduce, and all you pay is your deductible.

Tina Said:

Rental car insurance -- what does it cover?

We Answered:

All rental cars come with liability insurance in case you run into someone else. What you are buying as insurance is Collision Damage Waiver which covers any damage to the rental car itself. If you bring the car back with a new dent then it covers the cost of repairing that dent. If you are a careful driver and are careful as to where you park the car then CDW is a big rip off. Your likely hood of damaging the rental car is almost nil. Also your own insurance may cover the loss.

Another type insurance that they sell is Personal Accident Insurance. That covers your personal injuries if you have an accident. It is an even bigger rip off. I worked at a big rental car company and those insurance charges were huge money makers.

Javier Said:

What does a supplemental liability car rental insurance cover?

We Answered:

It covers damages to another car if you are at fault. Example:

You rent a Ford Mustang and then rear end a Chevy Tahoe. The SLP will cover damages to the Chevy Tahoe but NOT the Ford. You either have to take their Damage Waiver to pay for the FORD Mustang or file with your own carrier.

REVISION: My answer is based on the fact I live in Texas and our insurance rules are backwards. The person below who said I was wrong in incorrect, I am only giving you information regarding Texas insurance laws. I worked for a rental car company for 5 years and am now an adjuster for a insurance company. I know a thing or two about this sort of question.

Jeffery Said:

Is it necessary to buy Rental Car Insurance even though i have my car insurance policy with me?

We Answered:

When you rent a car, you have to have full coverage on the care that you own (your personal vehicle) and then that will automatically carry over to the rental. If you do not have full coverage you can add it to your existing policy for the amount of time you'll be renting the car OR just buy the insurance from the rental place. And to answer your other question, no your policy will not cover somebody else's car just because you're driving it. Insurance covers vehicles, NOT people, even if you were in an at fault accident, your friend/relative's insurance would have to cover that loss.

Tracy Said:

Deer hit & found my credit card & insurance does not cover. I declined rental insurance. What happens now?Help?

We Answered:

Even if you have comprehensive and collision on your own auto, it often will not pay for damage to a rental vehicle. If you rent a vehicle, it is best to purchase the extra policy they offer even though it is expensive. If you rent vehicles on a regular basis, you might check with your agent. There might be an endorsement that you can have placed on your auto policy to cover damages to a rental vehicle. I am not sure about having that available on personal auto policies, but I know you can have such a coverage endorsed on commercial auto policies. Generally speaking, your auto policy will only cover liability when you are driving an auto that is not on your policy.
