What Does Medical Insurance Cover

Joy Said:

what is the average cost for lasik eye surgery? Does medical insurance cover any of it?

We Answered:

Medical insurance covers medical problems (in most cases). Myopia / hyperopia/ astigmatism / presbyopia that requires spectacle correction is not a medical problem and hence no insurance company that I know of has ever covered laser eye treatment in this case. Laser eye treatment is considered an elective cosmetic surgery - hence the problems people have trying to claim damages when things go wrong. (unless you can prove negligence, you don't stand a chance - exhaustive consent forms, voluntarily having a surgical procedure on healthy tissue etc)

Prices seem to average around $2100 per eye.

Does anyone know what basic medical insurance covers in Dubai?

We Answered:

Usually in Dubai the compensation plan is as follows:
a. Basic
b. Benefits

Benefits would usually include:
a. Transport
b. Housing
c. Annual Leave and other leave types (Sick Leave, Casual Leave)
d. Air Ticket for you and your family (depending on the grade you will get for self and family either once a year or once in two years).
e. Children’s School Fees
f. Medical Insurance (Again depending on the grade u will get for self or self and family). It is important to check what the insurance covers and not covers in terms of benefits and how much does the employee needs to pay for every visit or is everything covered by the insurance.
g. Gratuity (You get this when u leave, usually 21 days of basic salary per year of service with the company). Usually there will be a minimum service before you can get that money when u leave.
h. Some companies also give interest free car loan.

There are also some companies who do not give the above benefits specifically detailed as above but can be included as part of Basic.

Now to answer your question of "Basic Medical Insurance", I would guess that it would cover the basic doctors visit and may not cover the operations, maternity and stuff. But again you need to get a clear answer from the potential employer to see what exactly does it mean. Ask for the medical policy document issued by the insurers will give you all the details. So if you think there are things that you need you can have the following two options:
a. Tell your company to add the features and you can pay the difference in insurance premium.
b. You can take an additional insurance on your own (It will usually be expensive as companies would get bulk discount which individuals may not).

Hope this answers your question.

does anyonew know what dental procedures medical insurance will cover?

We Answered:

Medical insurance does not cover anything relating to teeth. You need separate dental insurance for that. (And if your regular doctor bills anything that is related to dental - it'll be denied.) Call member services (the number is on the back of your card) to confirm.

Chris Said:

Does Tricare (active military insurance) cover all medical bills? What about dental?

We Answered:

It depends on what kind of TriCare you are on..TriCare Standard or TriCare Prime. If you are on TriCare Standard there are copays and deductibles. If you are on TriCare Prime there aren't. TriCare Standard is what you are automatically enrolled in when you marry an active duty servicemember. TriCare Prime you have to specifically enroll in. TriCare Standard has its copays and deductibles, however you have more flexibility in your care. TriCare Prime doesn't have any out of pocket but you are a little more limited in care.

TriCare will cover most everything. The only things they do not cover are elective cosmetic procedures (i.e. breast implants, face lifts, etc..unless it is in result from an accident or cancer) and they do not cover chiropractors. Other than that, yes, most things will be covered completely. However it is always your responsibility to check with your benefits if you have any doubt about whether a certain procedure is covered. Vision is included with TriCare however it only covers a basic eye exam so if you have contacts you have to pay the difference between the basic eye exam and the contact lense exam. TriCare does not cover any type of glasses or contacts.

Dental is part of TriCare but also a separate entity. You have to specifically enroll in the dental program, it is called United Concordia. You can enroll on their website as long as your active duty sponsor has more than 12 months of active service remaining. This does cost you a monthly premium that is autmotically deducted from your husband paycheck. For a single dependent its around $11 a month, for 2 or more its around $23.

If you have any more questions post more information and I'll check back here.

What does medical insurance cover in US?

We Answered:

health insurance in the US is woefully inadequate, you have to make co-payments to the doctors for office visits, you have to make co-payments for medicines, there are annual deductibles that run to the thousands of dollars and until those are paid, insurance pays nothing, there are high co-payments for emergency visits and hospital stays, and then insurance only covers 80% of "allowable" charges, meaning they will only pay 80% of what THEY think a test or procedure should cost, not at all what it actually costs. For instance, I had an CT scan with contrast, the bill was 1500 dollars, the insurance said it should only cost 300 and they paid 80% of that 300, leaving me to pay over a thousand dollars for that test. (in addition to the ridiculous monthly installment I have to pay to have the insurance in the first place.) It's like insurance companies don't live in the real world, they only pay what they want to pay and nothing more, no wonder so many people don't have or WANT insurance, it costs more than it is worth.

Ronnie Said:

does the army insurance cover medical issues that you have prior to joining the army.?

We Answered:

Yes they would still cover it. The doctors who would be looking at it are only concerned with treating you, not with whether you needed a waiver to get in or even lied about it at MEPS. Besides that, they wouldn't have acccess to previous medical records from before you were in anyways.
