What Does Car Insurance Cover

Ross Said:

Does car insurance cover car theft?

We Answered:

Courtney is correct, you definitely want what's called comprehensive insurance (comp). If your car happens to get stolen, you will be reimbursed what your insurance company states is the value of your car minus what you choose as your deductible. However, if you finance your car rather than pay cash for it, I would advise you to purchase gap insurance as well. It's usually pretty cheap, and gap insurance covers any difference between what you owe on your car and what your car is worth.

For example: You buy your car for 5300. Several months later, your car gets stolen. You still owe 4900. Your insurance tells you that your car is worth 4000. You have a $500 deductible. Your gap insurance will pay the company you finance your car from $400 (4000 + 500 + 400 = 4900) so you won't have to pay anything further on a car you no longer own. This also applies if your car is destroyed in a car accident, although you'll need to purchase collision insurance for that.

Hope all that made sense.

Clara Said:

Does car insurance cover just the car, or the driver?

We Answered:

Your boyfriend's vehicle must have an insurance policy of it's own in order for the vehicle to be legal on the road. As long as you do not live with your boyfriend or use the vehicle regularly then you are covered by that policy while you are driving your boyfriend's vehicle. If your vehicle is owned by your parents, and the insurance is in their name, then their policy will not provide you any coverage while driving your boyfriend's vehicle. If you ever read the standard policy wordings for Ontario Auto Insurance you will see the policy provides liability and accident benefits coverage while driving other vehicles, but this coverage is only provided to the named insured and their spouse. So if your dad is the named insured (the name on the declarations page of the policy as policyholder), then your dad and his spouse would be covered if they drove your boyfriend's vehicle, however their policy would be secondary (and it would not provide physical damage coverage unless the policy was endorsed properly). However since you are only named as a driver the policy would not provide any coverage whatsoever while you are driving vehicles other than the described vehicle.

Does comprehencive car insurance cover the total cost I paid for car?

We Answered:

i own a repair shop, and your worrying way to much here, you need to slow down and take a deep breath, let the insurance company deal with this, your not responsible for finding the car ,and don't worry about the money part of it,they have to pay you current value for it they cant get by with no less than that,so just set and be patient and let them deal with it,if they find it and they have paid you for it ,the,ll keep whats left of the car,you don't have to worry about that part of it,just let the insurance company do there thing ,and then deal with it,good luck i hope this help,s.

Brenda Said:

what does basic car insurance cover?

We Answered:

Usually basic insurance only covers the other persons car/doctor bills if you are at fault in an accident. And if your insurance is the normal state limit, which i think is 10,000 a person 15,000 an accident, and you do more damage than that, they can sue you and you will have your wages garnished if you cant pay.

Kristina Said:

does car insurance cover break ins and stolen goods? If not, what does?

We Answered:

If damage was caused to your vehicle during the break in, that would be covered by your comprehensive coverage under the auto policy, less the deductible.

All of the stolen goods would be covered by your homeowners policy or your renters policy, less the deductible. The only items that would have been covered by your auto policy would have been items that were attached to your vehicle, such as the radio, and normally come with the vehicle. Personal property is never covered by an auto policy.
