Seth Said:

Would home owners insurance cover damage done to a tv by our dog?

We Answered:

Personal property like televisions are usually subject to "named peril" coverage which means only the causes of damage listed in the policy are covered. "Damage by domestic animals" usually isn't one of them. If the dog jumped and fell into the TV it still might be covered if "falling objects" is one of the covered causes of loss for personal property and the insurer decides a jumping dog could fit the definition of a "falling object".

If you have "all risk" coverage on your personal property it might be covered unless animal damage is specifically excluded in the exclusions section. Read it carefully since insurance companies do make distinctions between a cat or dog and say, a deer jumping through your living room window.

Damage done by domestic animals is commonly excluded for the "dwelling" section of the policy. This is mainly because dogs and cats ruining carpets by urinating on them is relatively common and would be difficult to sort out whether the damage was from a single occurrence or multiple occurrences requiring multiple deductibles.

It's worth checking your policy though.
