Most travel insurance only covers flight cancellations caused by the airline, the airport or emergency measures.

you'll have to read the small print on your policy - but it doesn't sound too promising. However if you are far enough ahead then you can cancel the flight and get some money back.

It's best to go to a travel insurance comparison web site for specific information. Trip cancellation/interruption coverage for weather conditions vary by plan. Most plans require that the adverse weather cause cancellation of your common carrier for at least 24 consecutive hours. Check the covered reasons(perils) very carefully as coverage will only apply to them.
