You have to see the policy certificate because you can buy different levels of coverage.

Yes standard insurance will cover you. I'm not aware of any policy I've ever had making a distinction between package holidays and independently arranged travel. The vast majority of my travel is independently arranged by myself.

I actually came across a Rugby World Cup promotion from Travel Insurance Web - they already claim to be the cheapest UK travel insurance provider and now are offering 20% off all policies bought before the end of the tournament to celebrate England's success in getting through to the semi-finals.

I just got a quote based on 2 days to France - £3.80!

You don't have to be travelling to the RWC to take advantage of the offer either!

I would definitely recommend travel insurance. It covers lost baggage, losses due to cancelled or delayed flights (ie, if you arrive a day late lose your first night at your hotel), and medical coverage (does your UK insurance cover you in France?).

Many travel insurance companies offer annual travel insurance - you'd be covered for ALL of your trips within a year for one price. In the U.S., Travel Guard offers annual insurance; I'm afraid I can't help you with UK insurers but I'm sure you could find something similar.
