The National Association of Insurance Commisioners has useful info all consumers should consult, including statistics on the number of complaints each company receives.

I could not find the number of policies carried, but they do report the combined value of the policies carried, this should be a fair measure of relative size, these numbers were taken from a complaints report, the number in parenthesis is (the complaint index) a measure of complaints validated by the state.

Here's a short table of the big names. State farm is the monster of the group with $26 Billion in policies. they also have the lowest complaint index.

You want to check their AM Best rating. I am pretty sure the website is AmBest.com
They factor in different variables, such as how long the companies have been in business, how much money they have behind them, and how they handle claims. Then they rate the companies from A+ and lower. You should always get a company's AM best rating, and never settle for less than a B. Hope this helps!

VPI is the oldest which is why you hear about them a lot, but it doesn't necessarily mean they are the best. In fact, they seem to get the most complaints (ripoffreport.com and search for pet insurance).

You should look at review sites like http://www.petinsurancereview.com which has user ratings on the companies.

Personally, I have Trupanion and I like them a lot. They have gotten great reviews because they have good customer service. I chose them because they cover 90% of all the medical bills, and because they don't have annual limits so if your pet has a horrible year, it will all be covered.
