Third Party Insurance What Does It Cover

Stacy Said:

What is third party car insurance? Can I, with no insurance, drive someone else's car, if they have insurance?

We Answered:

third party insurance is liability coverage. it will cover another car in an accident where you are at fault. third party refers to the victims of an accident if you will. insurance normally folllows the car. you would be able to drive his car as long as he gives you permission. if you were involved in an accident it would be covered.

Janet Said:

Can I tax a car with my Third Party Insurance cover?

We Answered:

I'm afraid you are wrong. To drive your mum's car that car must have it's own separate insurance and every time you drive her car, you are driving illegally and if you get stopped by the Police, you have lost your mother's car and you will get points and a fine.

To get her car taxed, you need either to insure the car directly or get your mum to insure the car then it can be taxed.

Robin Said:

Third Party Property Car Insurance Claims?

We Answered:

i'm in insurance claims in australia.

yes, your insurer is right. the low price you pay for third party property damage insurance means you are only paying your insurer to step in and fix someone else's car, if you are at fault - which you and your insurer is indicating is not the case.

does the other person actually have any damages and are they attempting to claim their damages from you? you've said they feel they are not at fault, surely this means that they will be attempting to recover their costs from you if they have any? if so, then yes, you should attempt to relodge with your insurer and see if they will decline liability to the other party on your behalf. but this still doesn't solve the fact that your vehicle is damaged.

perhaps you can re-approach the small claims court and advise them that you are NOT both covered by insurance. Only the other party is, as technically your insurance doesn't respond in your case - you simply haven't bought that cover and under the circumstances the other party is refusing to accept responsibility and compensate you for your damages, even though they have insurance.

further to the first persons suggestion, this is erroneous. you cannot, under current privacy act legislation, contact the other persons insurer and lodge a claim against their policy on their behalf.

other than that, i don't really know. sorry.

Sylvia Said:

What does the 'fire and theft' part of third party insurance cover exactly??

We Answered:

No such thing as 'fire and theft' part of third party insurance.
'Fire and theft' coverage, if you have it, is on your policy, which is first party coverage.

Lance Said:

Why does the type of car I get affect the price of Third Party Only Insurance?

We Answered:

Because, if it's bigger and faster you can do more damage in it*. Plus, crash statistics come into it. So if a lot of drivers before you have caused a lot of accidents in this same model/spec then you, unfortunately, have to pay more because their logic is you're more likely to do the same.

*this includes cars that score poorly in accidents involving pedestrians. They will seek compensation if mowed down.

I've been driving 24 years and I think it sucks too. And encourages people to drive without insurance which is just wrong on so many levels.
I don't know the logic behind this but it may be worth a try. I drive older cars, not classics just what I can afford. I entered my details into a website for a quote last week. Just out of interest I wondered if I could save money by opting for 3rd party fire & theft as opposed to fully comprehensive. The quote went UP from £210 to £280. So I could pay more for less cover. I really don't understand that one.
But if that's anything to go by you may be able to save about 20%. Which on your quotes could be £800 to £1000. Worth a try.
I'm still puzzled why my identical quote was £70 cheaper than fully comp.
