It's not the California part that your insurer is having a hard time with - it's the "driving for work purposes". And depending on what you're doing, that can get VERY expensive.

There are insurance companies out there who do do temporary insurance cover but due to the economic crisis they are reducing their risks by increasing the age minimum.

Who has insurance on the car you are going to take to be repaired? Why not ask them to add your name to their insurance as this will most probably be cheaper?

If the owner doesn't have insurance, first check that all MOT and Road Tax is valid and if they are, see if it's cheaper for your Dad to be the main insurer then get you added as an additional driver. If the MOT and Road tax are not valid, don't drive the car until they are valid.
