You need to be living in Australia at the time you take out your travel insurance policy if you want to use an Australian travel insurance company.

generally you can't start insurance once you've left the uk - I think I may have looked into this before. I reckon your best bet is to contact your current insurers, explain the problem and ask nicely for cover.
