Health Insurance sucks - how do I prepare for another sickness?

We Answered:

Getting prior authorization from your insurance company for any procedures is standard among many health insurance plans these days. So no, it is not weird and your GP should have the necessary forms to handle the request.

What medical assistance is available to those in USA who are not covered by medical insurance?

We Answered:

Actually the statistics show that 70% of Americans are either uninsured or underinsured. That is so sad and madening. The cost of traditional Medical is outrageous. There is a very affordable solution - http://www.helpyousavenow.com I know that there are governament assistance out there for some. However alot of times people do not qualify - this company has no qualifications and also exepts all pre-existing conditions. Check it out

Insurance company refuses to cover maternity after expiration...?

We Answered:

After your policy expires, they don't pay for ANYTHING. Not maternity benefits, not for flu treatments.

There is no "ongoing benefits" after a health insurance policy CANCELS. So yes, the pregnancy is not covered after Jan 15th the same way nothing else is covered after Jan 15th.

You're right, no health insurance company will write a policy on a pregnant woman. Your options for coverage are:

1. Find a job that will offer you benefits - as you have prior coverage, the pre-existing condition clause doesn't apply
2. Enroll in graduate school to try to continue the coverage on the current plan
3. Marry the father, so you can get added to his health insurance through his employer
4. Apply for Medicaid - welfare health insurance - to cover the pregnancy

Raymond Said:

Anyone else stressed by what insurance will cover and what they don't?

We Answered:

We don't have national health care because we are not socialists. Look at other systems, like in the UK for example. People don't have to pay for surgery there, but often they have to wait long times to get surgery. People die waiting; thus a black market has been generated for getting procedures done, and of course this is paid in cash by the desperate.

Anyway, just get a regular insurance plan that will cover pregnancy. It really is not that confusing. Then you know you are covered.

As for the way it is treated, people get upset that they can't get insurance after they are pregnant, but this makes sense. It is like trying to get flood insurance on your house after the flood. Or accident insurance on your car after you rear-ended someone. We have to remember that insurance is not charity, it is a business. They work the system, and so do we. Learn to play.

By regular, I mean, not short-term insurance. Any insurance plan offered by an employer would qualify, as would most private insurance. The key things are to find out if pregnancy is covered. If it is, when? Is there a waiting period? If it is not, you will need to add a pregnancy rider. The same question applies, when does coverage take effect? After 3 months? A year? Then the other questions are standard. What is your deductible? What are your copays? After the deductible, what percentage do they cover? These questions are ones you will ask of any insurance, not just that intended for pregnancy. Generally, all that is "medically necessary" will be covered. This excluded circumcision in most cases.

Yes, I am aware we have many socialist programs in this country. We are on a slippery slope for sure. But last I checked, we are still a republic.

Is it unjust to not cover pregnant women? No more so that not covering the public in general. Medicaid (socialist program) covers low-income women. I think that a lot of this problem would fix itself if women planned ahead better, as you are, and I applaud you for doing so. The tricky part is women who make too much for medicaid, don't have insurance, and end up pregnant accidentally. I feel for them; those are tricky circumstances. But they got themselves into it. And just because a woman does not have insurance, does not mean she cannot get healthcare. We tend to think that is the case, but it is not. Most doctors and hospitals have reduced fees if you pay in advance while you are pregnant. Arrangements can be made.

What is the age limit for a child to be covered on health insurance in Virginia?

We Answered:

The key word is MAY. It does not say MUST. From the law that you cite:

"Coverage under a group accident and sickness insurance policy, except a policy issued pursuant to subsection B of § 38.2-3521.1, MAY (my emphasis) be extended to insure:

1. The spouse and any child who is (i) under the age of 19 years, (ii) who is a dependent and under the age of 25 years, or (iii) who is a dependent and a full-time student under 25 years of age, without regard to whether such child resides in the same household as the insured group member, or any class of spouse and dependent children, of each insured group member who so elects; and

2. Any other class of persons as may mutually be agreed upon by the insurer and the group policyholder."

This is all subject to change because of the health care legislation. Insurance companies will be required to provide dependent coverage for children up to age 26 for all individual and group policies. However, the rule does not take effect until six months following enactment. The key word is "dependent". Regulations are yet to be written that will clarify to what degree young adults have to be financially dependent on their parents.

They will have to offer coverage but the law does not say you must remain on your parents policy. Stay tuned you can't really do anything until you hear from your insurance company. ...

Emma Said:

How can i insure my salary as my company has no sickness benefits?

We Answered:

There are actually two types of policies for this type of cover.

The first type of policy is often taken along with a mortgage. It is known as Accident, Sickness & Unemployment (ASU) but you do not have to take the unemployment element of the cover if you do not feel it necessary to insure against redundancy. You can usually insure up to 125% of your mortgage and associated insurance costs which will be paid out in the event of you being unable to work due to illness or injury. The benefits will pay out for either 12 or 24 months (depending on the policy) or until you return to work, whichever is sooner.

The more comprehensive form of cover is Permanent Health Insurance (also known as Income Protection) and will cover up to 65% of your salary. The benefits will be paid out either until your set retirement age as specified on the policy or until you return to work, whichever is the sooner.

Obviously Permanent Health Insurance (PHI) provides much greater cover as if you are unable to work again you have an income throughout your working life but this means that it is often far more expensive. The other main difference between the policies is the application process. Under ASU it is a simple application and the cost is the worked out per hundred pounds without any underwriting. The underwriting is then done in the event of a claim. However, PHI is underwritten upfront so the insurer will want full details of your health, employment and lifestyle and the premiums are set accordingly. The higher risk you are the higher your premium will be.
