Advise you not to purchase pet insurance. I spent more on the pet insurance for my 5 yr old Boxer than on her vet bills. She had med problems and they didn't cover any of it plus they forms are tedious and your time to submitt them runs out. Better to save your money and pay your vet.

VPI is the largest and oldest pet insurer in the nation. With our new Medical and Major Medical plans you can choose an annual (not per-incident) deductible of $100, $250, or $500. VPI also offers CareGuard Coverage that helps with preventive care and treatments such as blood work, wellness exams, vaccinations, and teeth cleaning to your dog healthy.

To give you an idea of how pet insurance works, this would be the process if you were to file a claim with VPI:

1. Visit Any Veterinarian - you can visit any licensed veterinarian worldwide. Simply pay for treatment at the time of service.

2. Submit Your Claim - Fax or mail your claim form along with your invoices.

3. Receive Reimbursement - After meeting your policy’s deductible, you are reimbursed according to your plan’s benefit schedule allowance or the eligible invoice amount, whichever is less.

While looking for pet insurance, one thing I would research is how often, and why, your premiums may be increased. VPI periodically raises rate as your pet ages, but unlike other companies doesn't surprise you with huge rate increases. We also do not penalize you for making a claim - you could file 20 claims in a year and it won't have any effect on your premium. Well would you rather get that couple thousand dollars back in a few weeks or have it be gone for good?
Sure it sucks waiting, but that's what credit cards are for. I have my dog signed up with Trupanion and they are supposedly the quickest at repaying claims, and with my experience it took about a week for my first claim to come back so it's not too bad.

But the way I think about it, is what if your pet has cancer or some other chronic illness... then you're paying bills every month-- it certainly would be nice to be getting money BACK monthly as well.
Basically, the point of pet insurance is to reduce the rates of people having to put their pets to sleep because they can't afford treatments. If you get a $3000 bill, you might be like "wow, well Fluffy is pretty old anyway, I'd rather just put her to sleep." But with pet insurance, "wow, that's a lot of money, but I'll get it back in a few weeks so it's alright, let's save Fluffy."
