You need to notify the insurer as soon as you pass your test that you have passed. If you don't, and you have a claim, they will ask for a copy of your licence, and if they see that it is full, and you are insured for a provisional licence, they can reject your claim and void your insurance as it is failure to disclose material facts. That would leave you having to pay the cost of the claim yourself and facing possible charges of driving without insurance and obtaining a motor insurance policy by deception.

The insurer will look at the difference between the two quotes, and then pro-rata the difference based on the amount of cover you have remaining, for example if it's £500 more and you have six months left, you will be looking at roughly £250 extra. They may also charge a small administration fee.

What you can try is putting the person who currently supervises you down as a named driver. They don't have to drive the vehicle, but if the insurer thinks that the driving is being shared between yourself and an experienced driver, it can bring the cost down.
