The percentage is impossible to know because your details are private and unique to yourself.

Instead of guessing a percentage and worrying about a broker, why not choose a company that lets you change your mind if you don't like the car?

I'd choose Direct Line - they offer pay per monthly schemes with 0% APR. So you can cancel if you change the vehicle and you haven't handed over £500+ for example, just a monthly fee.

Also consider Norwich Union ''Pay As You Drive"™'' system - they now offer up to 30% discount for their limited miles/hours policy that fits a satellite tracking device to your car free of charge.

You can waste hours, weeks, months of your life with car insurance.

I'd just get on with it, get insured and get your life back!

It could be classed as a double indemnity, I think, so having two lots of insurance on it would cause probs if there was to be a claim ~ I am no way an expert on this, so you'd best double check, its just how I understand it

Not illegal, but a definite waste of money since you can only collect on one policy in the event of a claim. Just make sure the new policy is in effect and cancel the old one.

As I am sure you realize by now from your own gut and from what everyone here already stated your insurance company will not under any circumstances cover you for this accident.

That said I can at least give you some peace of mind in terms of the other driver. You need to call either the other driver or his insurance and 1) admit liability for the accident, 2) admit that you did not have insurance & 3) acknowledge that you will accept responsibility for payment of all damages. The insurance company for the other driver will then pay their insured under uninsured motorist coverage (which he hopefully has) and you can then make arrangements with them to pay a small monthly amount until the total is paid in full. They will tack on interest and you cannot under any circumstances miss a payment without making prior arrangements and only under dire circumstances. If you fail to make a payment, they can and will take you to court and get a judgment against you (which will result in damaged credit) and will have your driver's license suspended which will likely result in your having to file an SR-22 and comply with the payment arrangement again in order to get it re-instated.

In terms of fixing your car, I would research used car parts on the internet, junkyards, etc. and then find a shop that is willing to give you the insurance rate to fix the car (i.e. insurance companies usually get about a 15% discount off the rates). Your best bet on repair shops is to aggressively shop around or you might want to try Craig's list and barter with someone who knows bodywork/car repair if you have a skill they can use.

I am really sorry that you had to learn such a tough lesson this way. Also one more thing--driving without getting enough sleep is equivalent to driving under the influence. Next time don't try to shortchange yourself or others when it comes to sleep because you could end up with fatal results!
