Life Insurance Mortgage Cover

Wade Said:

In the US can a 17 year old live alone?

We Answered:

Legally, she cannot be a beneficiary of an insurance policy nor can she assume the responsibility for the mortgage.

The child can inherit IN TRUST - which means someone else has to be responsible for the money, any bills and care of the child until she reaches the age of majority (18 in some places, 21 in others).

Insurance proceeds are not part of her estate. Whoever she lists as beneficiary will collect - hopefully in trust for her minor children.

Hopefully, Mom has a will. If not, all her living children will inherit equally - which means the house will probably be sold and the proceeds will be equally split.
