Chad Said:

Do you know of alternative treatments to surgery for protruding L5/S1?

We Answered:

I would continue with the physiotherapy and consider accupuncture and also some lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss (if overweight), eating less foods that cause inflammation and more that reduce inflammation (basically less meat and more fruits and veggies. Also take anti-inflammatory agents such as asprin or naproxen according to label instructions. I'm not a hippie--in fact I'm a pharmacist, but I really don't believe that chiropractors or spinal surgery for disc problems do a lot. A recent study showed that a lot of people have protruding discs, but they only cause trouble in a few people. So with these above changes, hopefully a conservative course will help it heal in its own time. My mom has lower back problems and she got some epidural steriod injections, and they do help temporarily. Those are probably ok. But her surgery did not increase her movement ability or lessen her pain. Also if there is nerve pain involved consider taking Neurontin (gabapentin) for pain.

23 years old. Should I buy whole life now?

We Answered:

Price both whole life and term life. Buy the term life and put the difference in a mutual fund. In about 5 years, the mutual fund will be worth enough to buy term insurance for the rest of your life.
