It was interesting, but there was so much of the story for such a confined time & space that I found my mind wandering. That's not a criticism of your work, just the limitations of trying to read w/ clarity to make observations. However I have these suggestions:

change slow bites to nibbles.
peaked should be piqued
after sentence about calling every 6 mo. try "each time they're a little
more insistent for a finish date"
Really well--"Quite well, in fact, so much so that periodically I'd get
a residual check for the few stray copies sold."
Past successes...inspire him
Inspiration or aspiration? If you use inspire in a previous sentence, you
could use aspiration
you're first book should be your
seemingly unphased--do you mean unfazed?

I know it seems I'm nitpicking (by the way you didn't put an apostrophe on a couldn't), but I got caught up in it. You've obviously thought this story through & your hard work shows. As I got into it, I could identify w/ the emotional baggage they had--"never to be spoken of again" as someone once said. It's very good. I love the names by the way--suggests real people. Keep up the good work.

Haha, no worries. You aren't a loser at all. If you are going into your senior year, then it is probably the summer blues. You will get right back into the groove once school starts, be it high school or college(?). You certainly aren't a loser and I am sure a lot of people feel the same, it is just temporary. If you want, just call your friends, I am sure they won't mind and they, as you never know, may be in your situation, quite bored. They probably want some fun too and possibly they are too shy to call? so you could make the first move. Good luck, absorb the sunshine and smile! :D

Well I guess your not an A student in economics 101. You can complain all you want about big oil or auto's or capitalism..but its the left that tells you these things. They aren't some bastion of truth out there trying to fight the good fight as an underdog, they have been spreading thier own agenda of socialism and its a shame that people that are not in touch with reality listen to them.
Tell me one person that made it in this world by opening up a business and didn't make a profit ? That is what capitalism is all about, you provide a product, a service, something...and at a cost. The market is open and no one forces you to use the service or buy the product. The market determines if its a good or needed item or idea. That's about as fair a system you will get. The options ? a Government totally in control and your opinion or input isn't considered or wanted (communism) or worse..you can disappear in the middle of the night and never be seen again (under Saddam's rule in Iraq) or maybe you want a community like Europe, thus taking the powe out of the hands of the people, and sometimes...the smaller countries. All these experts working on the problem aren't always working on it, some are simply manufacturing a problem. Take global warming for instance. No matter what you believe about it..who is it that said it was un-natural ? who is it that can prove its detrimental ? NO ONE, yet here the enviormental whackos, groups, and Governments are all making strides and introducing programs to combat it. yet they can't tell me why the "ozone hole" was largest in 1956...before the use of CFC's..which resulted in us changing the use of materials...which has contributed to deaths in America....can anyone say....Space Shuttle Challenger ?
The rant has tripled the cost of medical inhalers, raised the price of Corn and anything corn touch's ...like feed , corn syrup, etc, etc. We are being pinged on to use Ethanol, an inefficient, power robbing alternative that our Government subsidizes around 45 cents from manufacturing to use...and where do you think that money comes from ?
And this is just one area of these "experts" telling us how to live our lives.
Austrailia once got rid of the populus's weapons....guess what......Duh.....crime rates shot up. If your going to effect any change with meaning on the population , you have to contend with the criminal element first, not instill some bad policy that's going to destroy the economy, the livlihoods or values of America.
There are far more people and other "experts" saying that the problem is values...or lack there of. Its the break down in the family unit, the corruption of society on the climb and lack of religion that's tearing America apart. It isn't so easy to just blame a company. If the company is doing bad, the market will probably punish them for it, if not, then it could be the doing of the CEO, CFO, President of the company ...etc.
Sorry for the long windedness..but way too many people want the easy answer like you, pointing the finger at the haves...whining about the have nots...and your not saying anything relavent. It was this general malaise that caused the big Tobacco law suits....but where did the money really go ? it didn't in most cased even make it to the healthcare system. People use the emotionally engaged and less educated as thier little troopers to force change.
