Is Abortion Covered By Insurance

Jim Said:

On what grounds is abortion covered by insurance? And WHY?

We Answered:

If the fetus put the mother in life-threatening danger, medical insurance will pay to abort the pregnancy. It is simple, just as any life threatening injury is covered by insurance, so is abortion, when medically necessary.

You would most likely have to be admitted to the hospital and be evaluated by a diagnostician. If they come to the conclusion that that is the best treatment, then it will be offered to the patient (mother). The doctors would attempt to have the baby if it is far enough along and it would not endanger the mothers life. Of course the patient has the ability to refuse medical treatment, if she feels so inclined.

Insurance will not cover abortion that is not medically necessary. That is like asking your inurance to may for a tummy tuck. It is not impairing your heath; it is for personal reasons.

Joseph Said:

Since when is abortion covered by insurance?

We Answered:

Some insurance companies do cover abortion for any reason (mine does). If you look at it from a money stand point instead of a moral stand point, it's a lot cheaper to pay for someone's abortion than it is for them to have the baby. Giving birth is an expensive process, and the insurance company is in for a profit. If the baby is born with birth and genetic defects, then the insurance company will have to be shelling out a lot of money for the child for a long time.

I would like to point out that this is probably the logical economic process that a business goes through when deciding which procedures to pay for. It does not mean that this is my personal opinion.

Rhonda Said:

Would abortion be commonplace and covered by insurance if men got pregnant?

We Answered:

Abortion would be a right guaranteed by law if men were the ones to get pregnant.

Alex Said:

How much does medicated abortion cost? Is it covered by insurance?

We Answered:

It costs roughly $300-$500 and I don't know of any insurance that covers it.

Pauline Said:

Is medication abortion covered by insurance?

We Answered:

Call them. They should be able to tell you immediately what your plan covers. My health plan treats elective abortions as specialty treatment, and thus covers a certain percent after deductible. If you plan is similar but your deductible is high, that may essentially be the same as not being covered.
